  • Tiller bolt stripped out.

While installing a new Baystar hydraulic steering uniit in my boat, I managed to strip out the 2 1/4" 3/8x24 thread stainless bolt. The tiller threads are stripped as well. So why does the tiller need to be threaded? Could i just slide a through bolt in and secure the bolt with the Nylon Lock nut provided. This would secure the steering cylinder I think? Otherwise I'm gonna have to re tap the tiller and insert a helicoil. Finding the 2 1/4" bolt not looking so easy as well.

Separate question: Why is the tiller bolt not metric? I assume a Japanese motor would be all metric.

It's threaded for use of link arm or other steering arms that required a threaded hole, It's SAE thread because boat builders ask for it so as all motors are standard. If you bolt and nut it on then might want to double nut it for safety reasons.
