  • Dt40 no spark

my dt40 had no spark so I replaced the cdi unit with another one but it still has no spark! How can I test the cdi unit or any other suggestions to obtain a spark would be most appreciated...Charles..in Co Cork...Ireland.

Charles, I would check the stator coils. Especially the condenser charging coils.
If you don't have a manual, it would be a good investment.
What year dt40 is the motor? EFI, or carb(s)?
I would also check the gear count coil, it has to count the teeth on the flywheel, if not mounted the proper distance from teeth, it won't send signal.

When was it last running, and what happened when it stopped running?

Help us with some info on motor, and what happened.

Post back with some more info when able.

      Dt40

      hi solar an,

Thank you for your suggestions....but I don't know how to check a stator coil ?

I don't know the exact age of the motor either but the ref numbers are...04003/714373 . It has a carburettor and was running fine last trip out but after launching last week it just refused to start and had no spark at the plugs...I was told to replace cdi unit which I have done but to no avail....I will try and obtain a handbook on line somewhere ?

      Thanks again

      Charles

Charles your motor is a 1987, according to the numbers you posted.

Another question, is this a pull start, or does it have electric start with remote controls?

Does this motor have a kill switch? Where located if it does? Check to make sure it hasn't pulled out? This switch will ground the cdi, causing no fire to plugs. Have you tried new plugs?

With a volt - ohm meter you can test the switch for continuity. Or, if you have a 12 volt test light?

If you have a service manual, it will show you how to test different electrical parts on your motor. The manuals online, generally do not have clear pics, and wiring diagrams, but it's worth a try.

Post back, and let us know what you're able to do? Also any info I've asked you to give us, above. Good luck.
