I have an 82 DT40 motor that the starter needs rebuilt or cleaned just not sure. Does anyone now how to remove the bendix from the starter shaft? This is the hitachi starter. I forgot and left the top off my motor and it rained and I didn't stop to checked the starter and when I finally went to start the motor all it did was click. I pulled the starter and some water came out of the holes in the starter. It may be fried but I would like a shot at it before I replace it.

First thing I'd do before assuming the worst would be to let it dry thoroughly, then, since you have it off the motor, go ahead and bench test it to see if it runs. If not, then you've got a challenge. But you might just luck out. It might have just clicked because it was wet. Might not be the starter either. Might be somewhere else in the electrical system. I've bench testep and it will not spin. If I leave it hooked up the motor starts to get warm. Any idea how to remove the bendix?Comment

Okay, sounds like it's locked up. Sorry, I don't know anything about that particular starter. Hope someone here does.Mike

If your bendix is like mine dt140, you need to press down on the top sleeve to expose the ring that needs to be removed, before the bendix will come off.
Post a pic of the top of the starter (bendix), and another of the entire starter. That could help us help you more.

Looks the same as mine. There is a groove on the shaft with a lock ring. Pressing the outer sleeve down will expose the ring to remove, to get bendix off.
If you have an auto electric repair shop in your area (they rebuild alt, generators, starters, and other electrical motors, etc. for autos/ rv's/ even boats.). They could tell you if it's shot, maybe even order you a replacement.

Thank you for the info. So how hard is it to push the sleeve down?
I do but I found a new starter for $65 from dbelectrical. I want to see what I can do with it. I doubt I can get it rebuilt for that price.Comment

If stuck, PTA, but it must go down to remove the lock ring on the shaft.

I cleaned everything and now it at least spins . I just need to install it and see if it will crank the motor over. When I bench tested it it spun rrally fast but started to slow down. I doubt that's a good thing . There seems to be a little more resistance as it spins.Comment

Would spin and barely turn the motor over. I took it apart again and this time nothing. Oh well. Thanks for the advice.Comment

It's a start when it spins. But the real question is, would you put in that much trouble to repair the motor. Clean the collector, replace the brushes, oil the bearings lightly and then it should be good to go. There is not much more in a starter motor.Regards, Martin
