  • Rev Limiter on a 115 SS

I was trying to find out what the rev limiter on a 115 SS was. I bought a new flats boat and went through the break in procedure I’m at 8.5 hrs, I have a factory Suzuki Tach. My problem is I’m hitting the rev limiter at 5900 according to the tach and I don’t believe that is right. I also have a 20 pitch factory Suzuki prop and I’m only running 40mph.

I found out that the rev limiter for a 115ss is the same as for a regular 115, so it’s unlike a Vmax Yamaha where they give you another 300 rpm, so the question in my mind is what is different about a 115 vs 115ss other than price and an ugly paint job.

I was told that when you connect them to the SDS they come up as a 140. So they were insinuating that it uses the 140 software. Something along the lines for competitions with hp restrictions.

My Suzuki analog tach will read 5900 rpm, and the digital C10 will read around 6300 rpm at WOT.

The paint is the only difference. I think it looks cool. I have a 115ss on a aluminum 20' bay boat and it only runs 40 with a 14x20 prop. It ran 38 before I raised the motor 2 holes. Whats not to like about flat black and red.? It screams Hot Rod.

It is a good looking motor!

They say the 115A operating range is 5000-6000, and the 115SS is 5300-6300; kinda like the VMax
Weird though, on Suzuki's website both rpm ranges are the same under specs, unless you look at the product brochure

That brochure was the reason I went with the SS then when I get my engine and look in the owners manual and see it spins the same as the regular 115 I was annoyed. It ended up costing me $900. more because the dealer had a white 115 in stock and was giving a great discount, it also took a week longer to get in and I hate the color. I’m not impressed with it and wishing I would of gone with a Vmax.

If, indeed it is a 140 in disguise, it should not hit the rev limiter until 6300+ RPM.

Mt 140, runs 6100 RPM full of fuel and 1 person with a 23" SS prop. A 21" Alum. prop it hit the limiter.

They had to order the SS prop, and gave me a loner Alum. The Suzuki SS, really made the boat a whole different outfit. Not in top end, but hole shot and Mid Range, it is much more like the 2 Stroke I was use to.
