DF20A no restart when hot

I had this same issue on another brand outboard and it turned out to be the new style portable fuel tank vent in the cap which only allowed air INTO the tank. Fuel vapor was trapped by this vent valve and not allowed to escape into the atmosphere thereby pressurizing the tank and forcing fuel into the outboard flooding it. When your outboard is hard to start do you smell fuel? If so this is probably what is happening to you. An easy way to troubleshoot this issue (assuming you have a new style EPA Approved tank) is to simply loosen the fuel tank cap when you stop the engine. Allowing internal pressure in the tank to dissipate. If this solves your problem (like it did for us) simply removing the little orange rubber check valve in the cap is a permanent fix and you can leave the cap secured all the time now. This was especially helpful for us because we tilted the outboard to the full up (beaching) position which added to the flooding because tilting the outboard allowed the float in the high pressure fuel sump to open-allowing the pressurized fuel to flood in. wat is the year of the engine? there was a known issue with the high pressure pump. if it's vapourlock tou could clean fuel cooler

Engine year is 2016. I agree the New fuel tanks are a heck of a problem and vent terribly. I have tried several times to remove the pressure in the tank by releasing the cap. May be an idea to try and remove the orange piece out of the cap. Also beaching and most times lifting the engine when stopping (motor is on my dinghy).

Very frustrating to be stranded when you have a dinghy to get places!

I pulled the orange rubber check valve out of my cap and never had the problem again. Another thing you can try: disconnect the fuel line at the outboard before you tilt it up. However with the fuel tank able to breath in both directions (after check valve removal) it shouldn’t be necessary to disconnect the fuel line. Like I mentioned, I pulled the orange rubber check valve out of my cap and never had the problem again.

2016 DF20F Restart Issue Runs fine when it runs but irratically won't restart. Wait several days and will then start. Anyway to accelerate the process? The vapor lock theory sounds reasonable. Meanwhile how do you release the vapor lock?
