Default prop pitch

what is the rule of thumb on pitch, I just bought a stainless steel prop and was told to drop two pitch sizes

We need some more info. What motor, what size boat and weight if possible. What did you have before.. allum or ss 3 or 4 blade

It was alum, and it is a 115 dt 115

If you went from alum to ss and kept the same dia and number of blades then you should have kept the same pitch. If you went up in dia more than 1/2 inch then you might have needed to drop 1 pitch. If you went to 4 blades then you could have dropped 2 inches in pitch. It depends where your engine ran with the old prop

It is my understanding the pitch has a lot to do with how fast you need to get on plane, lower pitch you get up faster due to higher RPMs, so if you were satisfied with the way your motor performed prior to a new prop stay close to that pitch.
