1991 DT 9.9 - need help trouble shooting

I just got a 16' boat w/a 1991 Suzuki DT 9.9 It is in super clean condition and very,very low hrs on it. On my last trip out with 3 average size men total on boat, we seemed to have a slip in power as if it was gears didn't grab and pull as it should and always has. I adjusted the trim.....no luck! checked gear oil....good! when going slow it seemed OK. Then it was slipping or something like that when I gassed it. I'm hoping there is someone who can advise me on this problem. I don't want to do any damage or crack any seals with out advice 1st. I also noticed a adjustable tension rod for the trans on the shaft that puts it in gear and was wondering if that do anything? I can't seem to find any trouble shooting guides or help......yet!
