Why are gel cell batteries discouraged for a df20a? Does anyone know?

After some research it seems that the charging system on the motor may not be adequate to charge the battery. That would be ok as I have a deep discharge that will handle all accessories and is stand alone. The df20a has a manueal rope start so that would also not be a problem after the battery start shuts down (below 6 volts I think). The motor will run just fine without a battery as well.
That is half of the problem..... which is no problem. The other concern is that the gel cell or agm type batteries may damage the electronics on the motor....this is where I guess I get off this post and get a "wet" battery as my main "motor" battery.
