Trim cyl end cap

My 2003 DT225 small trim cylinders, one side the end cap popped off last year..the small cup that actually hits the engine when the cylinder is moved. I have a new one but it does not want to go on over the ball end without "excessive" force and I'm not ready to do that yet..do I need to remove the retaining clip, and then reinstall after its on the ball or will it just snap out of the way if I push hard enough...thanks

Well, I beat the old one to death and it still won't go on..so I bit the bullet and ordered another one...the snap ring slides into the groove on this one and a few medium taps with a rubber mallet and it slid right over the ball and is now retained just like I thought it should work
