  • 88 DT 40 No Spark and CDI Question

    Hello,

Boat is 88 DT40 and has no spark. Was just tuned up after sitting for a few years. Ran great for a week and died yesterday leaving the dock.

I have a Clymer manual and have tested the following:

    Pulser Coil - Reading 194.7 OK (Acceptable Range 160 - 230)
    Charging Coil - Reading 289 OK (Acceptable Range 200 - 300)
    Ignition Coil (Combined coil/cdi) Reading 2,620 low (Acceptable Range 3,100 - 3,200)

My question is the manual provides to specs one for a Primary test (Acceptable Range 0.2 - 0.5) and one for a (Secondary 3,100 - 3,200). It also says only the ignition coil secondary windings can be tested using an ohmmeter. It also does not say to replace the CDI if the test fails however other tests in the book indicate to replace the part....is the manual being cautions or might this be an over site?

Given my readings above and I have no spark it looks like I should be ordering the VERY EXPENSIVE CDI (Part #32900-94421) but would like some opinions before I do.

I am also wondering if something else could have caused the CDI to fail or do they just fail over time? I would hate to order a new one and have it fail for another reason.

    Thanks for any advice!

    Cheers,
