we clicked the starter with the battery off. When we started the engine the diagnostic gauge was flashing what looks like arabian letters and will not give any other reading. I have shut the whole system down and restarted. No effect. Any Ideas?

I have read this post several time and have not seen anything similar talked about
However here is what I might suggest
Seems like this could be a connection type problem
I would start by checking the connectors -take them apart and replug them back together and look for any possibility of corrosion
You may have to go all the way back to the connectors on the engine
Check everything
Have you checked battery connections? Power problems do strange things to electonics
