  • Suzuki DF115ATL vibration

    Hello

    I bought a brand new Suzuki DF115ATL and it installed to Bella 642 boat ( 740kg weight = 1631 lbs).Now running hours are 3h.

Now in break in period i feel some vibration in revs 3300-4200 rpms. Also whole boat will vibrate inside, and making extra noise in the boat. It Is it possible the outboard is installed too high? When it plane, water flows near cavitation plate or slightly below that.

This in thread had wrote same symtoms:

I had a new 2016 DF140a installed on my 2002 Cape Horn17cc in August. I a get motor resonance through the hull between 3000 - 4000 RPMS; It's is the worst at 3200 RPMS. I had two different dealers check for the resonance, and they both say it normal. One dealer told me that different style boats and motors can possibly amplify these noises. The breakin period was horrible due to the fact I had to stay within those RPM ranges. It gave me a bad headache and literally took all the joy out of my boat and motor. Fortunately, I don't run in those RPMS much for the fishing I do.
I found a couple of others with similar issues by search for suzuki vibrations, in google. It seems to me that the motor is not balanced correctly or needs counter balances. If you find out something different, or a fix please let me know!!!
How does your motor act idling? Mine seems to shake more at idle than the two stroke it replaced. My windshield and center console rattle; I can feel the shake throughout the boat in my hands and feet. It was nowhere near as noticeable with the two stroke. I have not experienced how people say you can't tell it running and recrank it; The motor maybe very quiet, but on mine from the vibrations and various other noises I know it's running!

If your motor is vibrating more than a 2 stroke, something is definitely wrong and you should get the dealer to fix it. Simple as that.

I have Df115 and several friends have DF115a and 140's and they are all super smooth and quiet at idle, and indeed, across the rev range.

Can I suggest you both take a video and post it here so we can see and hear what is happening? It is very difficult to comment based on a description of a noise and vibration.

Those symptoms he experienced were due to twin motors and propellor resonance due to unbalanced propellers.

However, it could be that your prop is also badly balanced. Even new props can be out of balance. Can you ask the detaler to swap to another prop of the same size and test again?

Thanks for the reply Moonlighter. I am downloading videos I have as we speak to YouTube, and I will attach them to my reply when they have finished. Looks like it may take awhile. I do have the address to the forum finds that are similar to what I am experiencing, and what I think Mackaiveri maybe experiencing; However, I'm not saying they are the same at all. Thanks

Here are some of the videos I have. I have more I need to get off the GoPro, and will download them later. I haven't water tested it since I got it back from the last Dealer, and the river is down for dock repairs in my area. They said they didn't find anything abnormal. They also check my valve adjustment, and they were in specs. I was a little shocked they didn't tell me before they performed that procedure. After getting back home around 80 miles away; I noticed that my mid section was painted and they didn't tell me anything at all about it. That's another story for another thread. Anyway, Those video are from an Iphone I had at the time of my first experience after delivery. Tell me what you think. Thanks.

Ok I looked at all those links and all bar one of them didn't bother to come back and tell us what the cause or eventual outcome was, which isn't helpful at all.

Only the final one - was determined to be an internal fault and the motor was replaced.

There must be many thousands of these 115/140 series engines being sold and installed every year, with a rare handful of complaints involving vibration, so it either something is not right, or its to do with the specific installation on the boat. Either ways should be able to be diagniosed and rectified.

So the message seems to be to get Suzuki involved. I would insist that my dealer get the regional Suzuki technical rep down to have a look at it and test it thoroughly.

We have seen issues with unbalanced or varying propellor issues here which is why I suggested to check that as a first, easy thing to do. My mate who is our local Suzuki dealer now routinely gets props scanned, balanced and matched on all twin-engine rigs for this reason, and has in the process found significant variation in new, supposedly identical, propellers.

Well, I did have the prop changed from a 22 pitch to a 20; I know it's not the same size prop. However, from that it did not change the resonance. Now, I called Suzuki about another issue of having my midsection painted without my consent or knowledge, and about my other concerns. They said I had to take it back to the Dealer and that I could not talk to a Rep; They directly communicate with the Dealers only. I am having Dealer issues and cannot talk to someone about the Dealer other than the Dealer??? I don't believe that all Suzuki motors are bad; However, mine is not quite right, and I cannot get support, and right now I'm afraid of the Dealers in my area!!!!

                  Nayna32:

My engine idling very smoothly, but when i run rpms to over 2000 rpm, boat will vibrates again. So is not a propeller problem, it is from the engine.

Is it possbile install a rubber plate between motor and boat installation. I`d heard an EVA plates?

Yes, these pads are routinely used on aluminium boats and some GRP boats here in Australia, I am sure there are equivalent ones available elsewhere.

If you are getting a resonating or harmonic vibration at certain revs like you've described, try your best to find what it is that is actually vibrating on the boat and either secure it tightly or move it to a position so it can't vibrate. I have a canopy support bracket on my boat that will vibrate at certain revs and it is simple to move it so that it doesn't vibrate.

Thank you both for the replies guys. I'm not try to get off of your concern Mackaiveri, but can you both watch my you tube videos and tell me if my shaking at idle is normal? Where I live its a Yamaha and Mercury place. I have the only new Suzuki that I know of. So I don't have any other motors to compare it to. I thought that it would be smoother at idle speed, but I don't know. Thanks

Ok, I had a look at the videos and the third one I think best illustrates the engine running.

That doesn't look normal or right to me.

My DF115 runs much more smoothly and quieter than that, and did so from new. And my friend who has 2 x DF115 a's on his cat - they run even quieter and smoother than my 2010 model.

I'd suggest you send that one to the dealer and ask them to review it.

Also on the run in, if the boat wont plane cleanly at 3000 rpm it is fine to give it a bit more revs so it will clean plane.
