  • Runs on land, not at sea

I have twin DF 70s about 20 years old. Two weeks ago one of my fuel connectors popped off, and the motor died. Seas were choppy. After reconnecting, engine was hard to start and died after a few seconds. I could not get engine to run for more than ten seconds that day. Next day, on land, after a few false starts, engine purred like a kitten. I ran it for about 15 minutes, at idle, fast idle. and in and out of gears. It easily starts and runs smoothly. Yesterday. i started it easily on the water. It ran for a few minutes, then died. I could restart it with ether, but it died after a few seconds, even in neutral . Back at the wash down rack, it easily started and ran smoothly. Two questions: is it possible the sea water got sucked in when the connector popped off, and why does it run well on land and not at sea? Any ideas appreciated.

Possible intermittent air leak at worn fuel line connection.
