My 2003 DF 140 Suzuki outboard sometimes refuses to go in reverse,it won't engage fully, tearing the gears. If you put the throttle in Fwd.all the way down, then it will go in reverse ok. So does throttle cable require adjustment, or replacement? Please advise, I don't want to chip any gears.

Has anyone out there experienced this problem in any Suzuki 4 Stroke outboard? Appreciate your reply and what you did to solve the problem?

This sounds as though the throttle cable / shift cable needs to be adjusted
Get someone to slowly shift from forward to reverse and observe where shift takes place
Probably just needs to be re-centered
