engine surging and dying periodically

I have a 6 year old 150 that starts right up, seems to idle fine, runs fine but periodically will surge and conk out after putting engine in neutral. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to indicate a problem. It does not skip ay all when running up to plane; RPMS are appropriate when running; when slowing down then putting motor in neutral, the engine will occasionally surge and sometimes conk out.

Anyone ever have this problem? Could it be a clogged filter?

You could check your filters but the problem can also be in your IAC valve or air bypass system. How is your battery? Do you have a manual for your engine?

Could be a number of things - one of which is a faulty anti-syphon valve on your tank. Symptoms very similar to what you described. The valve can be sticking and at low engine revs when fuel flow is minimal, the flow is insufficient to keep it open so the engine is starved of fuel.

The anti-syphon valve is an unnecessary evil on the tank, so Id suggest that you remove it. Did this after similar symptoms on my mate's Seaswirl Striper and problem solved, never to return. We actually unscrewed it from the tank, took it to the workbench and used a nail punch to punch out the internal parts - the ball, seat and spring, and then reinstalled it again basically as a open elbow fitting.

This is a simple and low cost thing to do, so even if it is not the problem, there is no downside.
