    It's been quite a few years and many hours since I verified tappet clearances. I used to have a sheet of paper where you wrote down each reading and it simplified the ordeal. I still have the tool to lift the cam shaft, etc. I just don't know what I did with the paper to record measurements.

    Not sure what you're asking, brother. I just made a few columns on a blank sheet, upper, lower intake, upper lower exhaust...and wrote down the measured clearances as I checked each one.

      Paperwork

      There was paperwork that came with the tool. Very convienent. Exhaust and Intake for each piston. Write down the numbers. No confusion. Very nice.

          I used this in an excel spreadsheet.

          A = B + (C – 0.25 mm)
          A : Correct thickness of shim for proper tappet
          clearance (mm)
          B : Thickness of original shim (mm)
          C : Original tappet clearance (mm)

              duaneb has the formula correct for the intake
              the exhaust side is (C-.32mm)

              so the formula would work like this on intake:
              s/b in range of .23-.27 mm
              if reading came up .15 mm
              C-.25 = .15-.25= -10 mm
              original shim has #240 stamped on it
              the thickness is 2.40 mm
              2.40 - .10 = 2.30mm or ID# 230

              since the clearance is tight in this example the new shim has to be thinner than the original to widen the gap to be in the middle of the tolerance range.
              as suggested an excel spreadsheet makes the math easier

              The only question I would pose: Is the clearance the same on all engines?

                Sorry, I should have specified that the formula I used was for 2006 DF140 and according to the service manual the exhaust and intake clearances are the same for that engine.
