  • Shift rod reconnect?

Pulled my 1997 Suzuki 85 DT and changed the impeller now cannot get the shift rod to align with the pin from the shifter- anybody have a tip on how to fiddle the position? Manual calls for removing the LU in neutral but in the removal it shifted into forward. I know the pin or screw that goes thru the rod is not going in because I can drop the LU with the screw all the way in-
    Thanks,

    reconnecting the shift rod.

Often the shift rod will change when putting LU back on. I find that putting LU in reverse is the easiest way. Once you have LU back on, shift the controls partially to reverse, align the connector, then shift all the way to reverse. If holes not aligned then use small vise grips on lower rod to pry it up, or screw diver between top piece and vise grips to pry apart while you push pin through hole. Do not change the adjustment on the connector, otherwise you may have to go through this a dozen times to get the adjustment right again.
