  • Hard to get reverse gears to mesh

I have a DT 140 that runs fine but here is my problem. Most of the time it won't go into reverse The throttle moves fine, the cables and linkage is in really good shape. It just seems that the gears don't always mesh in the lower unit. Once it goes into reverse all is fine. I never have any issues in forward.

Does this outboard have a momentary kill switch that could be the problem? I remember them on my old Merc 150's and if the switch on them failed, the motors wouldn't go into reverse very well.

Oh, and this only happens when I am in the water. Shifts into reverse everytime in the driveway.

    dt140, shifting problems

Has any service been done on lower unit prior to this problem?
It sounds like the connector (in midsection) is out of adjustment.
