  • running out of gas

I have a 2001 DF 70 four stroke. After adding 2,5 gallons of gas to the gas tank, the motor will run for about 10 to 20 minutes before running out of gas without any apparent leaks. Any ideas?

How close is your fuel pickup to the bottom of the tank vs the fuel level of 2.5 gallons of fuel? Your fuel pickup shouldn’t be touching the bottom of the tank otherwise you will pickup any dirt/moisture sitting on the bottom of the tank. Your tank volume will also be a factor, a 5 gallon tank with 2.5 gallons will be 50% full compared to a 100 gallon tank would be 2.5% full and thus the fuel pickup would have very little fuel available. Make sense?

Really the only way to get a accurate idea of your typical fuel use is to fill the tank to full, go and do a day’s fishing etc and keep track of total distance travelled.

Then go back and fill the tank again and record the actual fuel used. If you repeat this enough times you will get a general average that you can rely on in most conditions.

And as Murray said, doing what you are currently doing is kind of useless because of the tank pickup location etc.
