  • lower unit removal

Any ideas on removing a lower unit from a 2001 DT 225 that has been used in salt water and apparently never had the water pump serviced ? Of the 7 bolts holding it on, 4 twisted off and the holes on the other 3 that came out are probably stripped. The shaft is probably corrosion welded to the power head. The engine runs and the boat was used last year, says the owner, sounds hopeless and not worth it to me.

If it's been that long you might need a miracle, but always use a good wood block to help persuade the lower unit/shaft once all the bolts are removed. DO NOT HAMMER ON THE THIN ALUMINUM PLATES, they will break. If you can get 1/8" to 1/4" separation you can use wide wedges evenly on both sides to add more persuading. But it needs to be done if it's been that long, it is overdue.

Those stripped bolts, and broken bolts may still be repairable, check with a good machine shop.

Good luck, post back on what you find out.

The boat mechanic charged $244 and still could not get it off.
